There’s been a lot of buzz around S/4HANA lately. At the recently concluded HR2017, we met many customers who are moving to S/4HANA. The HR attendees were especially curious about:  1) What does S/4HANA have for the HR module? and 2) What’s the future roadmap?

With this blog I have tried to provide answers to some basic questions around S/4HANA, including the difference between Enterprise and Cloud editions in relation to the HR module.

S/4HANA Integration with SAP SaaS Modules

SAP’s S/4HANA Business Suite product provides innovative solutions that support end-to-end business processes integration between  core components and SAP SaaS products such as: SAP Ariba, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Fieldglass, Concur, SAP Hybris, SAP Cloud for Customers, SAP Financial Network, and more.

The following figure provides a great visual representation of this integration with other SAP SaaS modules.

Deployment options for S/4HANA

SAP offers two different deployment options for SAP S/4HANA:

On-Premise edition

Cloud edition

1. On-Premise Edition

The current available on-premise version for SAP S/4HANA is 1610.

As part of 1610’s recent innovations, the following features are available for Human Resources:

  • Core Organizational Management
    • OM allows you to build, maintain, and reorganize organization structures to:
      • Create and edit organization plans
      • View matrix for creating and editing matrix structures
      • Access expert mode to edit the characteristics of various objects and their relationships via Infotypes
      • Create, display, or change the organizational structure using the Organization and Staffing (Workflow) views
      • Assign characteristics to the organizational units.
  • Timesheet S/4HANA
    • Timesheet enables you to record and manage time data effectively.
      • Create and update time entries
      • Time management for concurrent employment
      • Approve, review, and reject time entries as part of manager self-service
  • Employee Integration with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central (SAP SuccessFactors is not part of SAP S/4 HANA shipment, it requires an additional product license)
    • Employee Central Connectivity enables you to replicate employee, organizational, and cost center data from SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central to SAP S/4HANA system. The following replication services are available as of now:
      • Employee Master Data from Employee Central to SAP S/4HANA
      • Organization Data from Employee Central to SAP S/4HANA
      • Cost Centers from SAP S/4HANA to Employee Central
      • Contingent Worker data Integration from Employee Central to SAP S/4HANA

“One of the key planned innovations for 2017 for HR is the – Enhanced Integration of SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll with SAP S/4HANA for payroll postings including cost center replication.”

  • Integration Capabilities
    • SAP S/4HANA on-premise integration scenario offers integration best practices with SAP’s SaaS Cloud solutions and third-party applications using the following three middle-ware:
      • SAP PO – Process Orchestration
      • HCI – SAP HANA Cloud integration
      • WS – Web Services

2. Cloud Edition

SAP S/4HANA Cloud edition is designed for enterprises that need standardised cloud integration offerings that cover the core business scenarios and line-of-business cloud solutions.

he following offerings are currently available as part of SAP S/4HANA Cloud edition:

  • Professional Services Cloud – for the professional services industry
    • Time recording for employees
    • Time recording for contingent worker via a purchase order
    • Time recording for subcontractor
    • Approve timesheets
    • Integration with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central to replicate: employee data and contingent worker data, company code and cost center data from EC to SAP S/4HANA system, employee photo integration from EC to SAP S/4HANA system

(Separate user subscription for SAP SuccessFactors is required)

  • Enterprise Management Cloud – for a full ERP scope
    • Time recording for employees
    • Time recording for contingent worker via a purchase order
    • Time recording for subcontractor
    • Approve timesheets
    • Integration with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central to replicate: employee data and contingent worker data, company code and cost center data from EC to SAP S/4HANA system, employee photo integration from EC to SAP S/4HANA system

(Separate user subscription for SAP SuccessFactors is required)

  • Finance Cloud
    • Pre-delivered integration with SAP SuccessFactors
  •  SAP Hybris Marketing Cloud
    • There are various editions available for marketing customers under Hybris, with no integration with SuccessFactors
  • Integration Capabilities
    • The main integration technologies are SAP HANA Cloud integration and web services
